A shocking insight into multiple issues. I didn’t sleep well after watching this. I have been to India and it was fascinating to see a film that doesn’t romanticise or exoticise. I witnessed some aspects of this film. Brave and gripping, but I was glad when it ended.
I felt I was in India witnessing events. Disturbing but an incredible film.

It was a difficult watch which took in a lot of complex interlinking issues. The acting was excellent with some very strong performances. There was a lot to take in and would repay another viewing as I'm sure I didn't get a greater understanding of all the issues it dealt with. It definitely wasn't sponsored by the Indian Police Force!
I'm glad you screened this - I have wanted to see it for ages. I wasn't prepared for the brutality against Saleem and was tempted to leave but am glad I stuck it out.

At last - a proper film with a proper story. Felt like I learnt something about a different culture and way of living.
Very interesting perspectives, well filmed and superbly acted by two female leads. Grim when torturing Salem but understand why they did it in context.
Excellent analysis of the complex intersectionality of gender, class and caste.
A really raw and powerful film exposing the terrible injustices and throwaway lives of those born into the wrong caste, along with racism, poverty and corruption. It was very well shot too.
Mixed Feelings?
The shots of Indian life in the town and villages were the most interesting for me - the beating to death scene I could have done without.
Santosh is first portrayed as shy/inscrutable but then becomes sadistic. Scenes/locations are sometimes difficult to follow.
Hard to watch at times, but good to see a film portraying how life is like in India's complex society - religion, gender, caste issues.
Couldn’t believe she was thrown in at the deep end with no training. The misogyny and casual violence was horrific.

I was really looking forward to this film, but the reality didn't quite match my expectations. Nevertheless, a worthy watch!
No doubt a well made film with the lead actor very effective, but a very unpleasant watch. Should there have been a cautionary warning on the CFS blurb?
The film was good, but I found there was quite a lot of unnecessary empty spaces where nothing happened. This can sometimes be used to good effect, but didn't add any value in this case. A warning in the programme about the prolonged torture scene would have been appreciated.

The film was well made and acted and conveyed its themes and opinions on modern India clearly and effectively - the moral corruption, the terrible effects of the caste system, misogyny, Islamophobia, and some bad aspects of the British colonial legacy. It was a difficult watch. I haven't made up my mind on whether it was a necessary watch. I would have difficulty recommending it to a lot of other people to watch.
Because of the violence because it is very upsetting and something I always aim to avoid.
I’m surprised this was 15 certificate. A really unpleasant story.

Excellent screenplay and acting but film was more or less concentrated on conflict and violence. Consequently light relief was seldom seen.
Disjointed and a very depressing film.
It identified the caste hierarchy well, identified poverty problems and those of women well. Justice? All too violent for me, I wanted to leave but was car sharing.
There was a worthwhile film hiding in there somewhere, but if they had set out to make as dull a film as possible, they could not have done better. The themes are promising: misogyny, corruption, moral dilemmas, hierarchies, caste - a rich mix. But none was examined more than cursorily. Brilliant acting from e.g. the senior policeman and the unspeakable mother-in-law. But a hopelessly under powered principal character stopped any sense of jeopardy or excitement. And what the dead cat had to do with anything beats me. Another example of the modern mystery: why did this film get made? What have we learned? Zip.
