A Selection of Audience Feedback
Positive
Well filmed and kept the audience interested in the outcome of the various plots and actions.
A great start to the season! An intriguing and well paced plot that held your attention throughout. It left you feeling satisfied like a good French meal!
Morally and emotionally intelligent and dynamic and never falling into excess or cliche.
Beautifully acted and an unusual and intriguing story. Really enjoyed it.
A thought provoking film that created a lasting reflection on our daily lives and family relationships, especially in older age.
A lovely start to the season - such interesting and complex characters.
Engrossing, with twists and turns, beautifully acted. Non-judgement a powerful theme.
Excellent performances and a great ambiguity of plot.
Plenty of unanswered questions. Complex relationships with debatable outcomes. Fascinating.
Excellent start to the season. Thoroughly engaging from start to finish, with a wonderful central performance from Hélène Vincent, adroitly directed as ever by Ozon.
Mixed Feelings?
I enjoyed it on the whole, but found parts of the plot unnecessarily vague and mystifying, and by the end I was unsure who had done what to whom, and why. A few answers to these questions wouldn't have gone amiss. I loved the scenery, atmosphere and everyday life details. It was a pleasant way to spend an evening.
Not convinced by the plot.
Would prefer to see the original title. Don't like the fact that the subtitles are American English. Translation cannot be exact, but some was too far from the French, in particular some colloquial renderings.
A good, but not a great film to start the season.
Rather a sad film overall, but I liked the way it left certain things unexplained (e.g. what did he go to prison for? the daughter seemed to think it was something awful?) and the moral ambiguity of doing 'wrong' for the 'right' outcome (even when it covers up the possible / probable murder of your own daughter / mother). Despite the slow pace, I was never able to relax - there was always a sense of menace. I'd like more French films.
Great casting. Not so sure about the ghost but the film raised an interesting moral dilemma.
Negative
Enjoyed the setting and liked the characters, but didn’t care for the plot - felt like a soap opera.
A cruel and cartoonish moralising film. A film about generational divide with none of the distance required or any of the heart of a Tokyo Story.
Raised questions without giving the answers.
